On this date in 1919, pianist and statesman Ignacy Jan Paderewski became the first premier of the newly created Republic of Poland.
Below is a short clip from the 1937 movie Moonlight Sonata where Paderewski injects a little humor into a tense situation when it is learned that he is a pianist, he is enlisted to fill in for the house pianist after she leaves in tears. The piece he was asked to play was his ” “Menuet Op. 14”
His identity still unknown (I think), he looked at the sheet music on the piano and stated that “I think I can just about manage that.” (The wiki on the movie can be read here)
