Cold Turkey

I’ve made the break, cut the cable and put the TVs away. As rates increased, my wife and I watched less and less to the point where we agreed to drop the service.

It’s been a week now  and I’m surviving just fine, listening to that old iPod and remembering some great songs I forgot about years ago.

Here is a picture of my “new” entertainment system. . . a Bose Wave Radio and an iPod from the early part of this century, sitting atop an antique chess stand.

I do allow myself to occasionally listen to some local talk radio, mostly for the traffic reports and just enough news so I don’t become uninformed.

We cut the cord a few years back – bought a digital antenna that would pick up free Over the Air (OTA) television. In our part of the world, that means about three local stations we like out of the six that are available. The system works well and the picture is actually quite a bit better than the picture we got from the satellite (there is no cable out here.) You would probably get a lot more stations in your part of the world!

Some systems have hundreds of channels with a small handful worth watching. I don’t miss it at all.

I agree – so many stations on cable or satellite, but not much worth watching. I was glad, though, that one of our three OTA channels covered the Olympics. Today’s digital antennas work on the same premise as the ‘rabbit ears’ that my parents had when we were kids – feels good to step back in time but with good picture quality!

I’m guessing you kept your internet service, which is usually a bit expensive as well…
