It’s been a few years since I’ve last read this book. First introduced to me in the late 1980s, I have read or listened to (I have it on cassette) this story dozens of times. There are parts that I have memorized.
Who can name this book from the opening paragraph?
Hafid lingered before the bronze mirror and studied his reflected image in the polished metal. “Only the eyes have retained their youth,” he murmured as he turned away and moved slowly across the spacious marble floor. He passed between black onyx columns rising to support ceilings burnished with silver and gold and his aging legs carried him past tables carved from Cyprus and ivory.

I am loathe to admit I’ve never read the book. Nor heard of it. But it is a well-written descriptive paragraph. Something to put on my to-read list? What’s it about?

It is a great story that is a twist on some important history. There is a full-cast audio recording that I got in 1988 ( on cassette). Listening to the audio adaptation is one of the most beautiful stories to hear and I’ve told my daughters that should the time come, I want to die listening to it. That’s how much I like it. The wiki link below is a very intellectual explanation, but the emotional impact of Hafid’s (hah-feeds) story cannot be intellectualized. If you have a cassette player, I’ll lend you the tapes.
